about us |
The reason why our clothes are different is because it is made from an extraordinary plant. It is called the hemp plant.
The hemp plant produces a range of fibers suited for high quality paper, textiles, construction material and cordage, seedcake and silage for animal feed and bedding; and oil for fuel, plastics, inks, cosmetics, foods, functional foods and nutraceuticals.
It can be grown commercially in temperate, sub-tropical and tropical conditions; in most soils and can be cropped up to three times a year.
As mentioned above, hemp has a lot of worthwhile properties, but however we here at Sensi threads were most interested in the hemp fiber, from which we make our cloth. Hemp fiber has a lot of advantages above cotton, to list a few.
- The strength of any fiber depends largely on its length. As hemp bundles may be up to 15 feet long as opposed to cottons' mere 3/4 of an inch, one could understand hemp having eight times the textile strength and four times the durability of cotton.
- Hemp is more absorbent than cotton, making it exceptionally receptive to dyeing.
- Hemp with proper processing can be made softer than cotton. There is a general misconception that hemp is coarse. In fact, the strength and coarseness of a fiber depends on how the fiber is spun and woven. hemp, is similar to flax, may be woven in many grades from canvas to fine linen.
- Like natural linen, hemp has the ability to breathe.
In conclusion, the broad range of hemp applications offers huge scope for growth in rural and regional development. Bioregional development leads to decreased imports, lower fuel bills, less dependence on currency flections and reduced vulnerability to geo-political changes in supply and demand. It is not only the clothes industry that benefits from this extraordinary plant, but industries and products like, agriculture, construction materials, cosmetics, food, furniture, paper, pharmaceuticals, plastics, recycling and retailing can all be supported through hemp commodities. |
